Be true to yourself

After spending much of my later life trying desperately to avoid being taken over by the surge of recent technological advancements, I seem to have inadvertently thrown in the metaphorical towel. I became aware of this last week as I walked gleefully down the street shuffling through my billion song playlist on my new iPod that is scarcely the size of a guitar pick.

Submission Guidelines

How to Submit to YPP

  • YPP assumes non-exclusive publication rights of all submissions.
  • We prefer submissions by e-mail.
  • In the case of mail-in submissions, only those with a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) will be returned.
  • All submitted work is subject to editing by YPP staff.
  • Please read YPP.net to get a feel for YPP style before submitting.

400-800 word True Life pieces

  • Chronicles an event that has occurred in your own life.
  • Is something that a large number of young people can relate to
  • Is a story with a beginning, middle and end.

500-800 word opinion pieces

  • Deal with youth issues (examples: pop culture, education, family life, sex and dating, political issues that affect youth, etc.).
  • Written in the first person, but is a story that affects a large number of youth.
  • Is a ‘rant’ that takes one side of an issue (though the other side should also be acknowledged).

500-1000 word PopMachine articles

  • Is an article dealing with music, movies, trends or anything pop culture related.
  • For example, a writer could chronicle a band, interview a musician or filmmaker or review a concert or movie. We welcome scathing critiques (or raving compliments) of trendy scenes, pop stars and trash TV.

 500-1000 word feature articles

  • Non-opinionated.
  • Deal with youth issues.
  • Are written from a particular angle or perspective.
  • Can be first person, but should give observations and not the writer’s opinion.
  • Should include interviews/research.

 80-120 word CD reviews/movie reviews/Web site reviews

  • Stuff that isn’t too mainstream. For example, we would be more likely to review an independent film over a summer blockbuster. Or a CD from an up-and-coming act over a big pop star.
  • CDs have been released for no more than a month.
  • Movies have been released for no more than 2 weeks.
  • Web sites that are funny, political, or interesting and appeal to youth.
  • Please read ‘The 411’ section of YPP.net before submitting.
