Be true to yourself

By Christopher Curry
After spending much of my later life trying desperately to avoid being taken over by the surge of recent technological advancements, I seem to have inadvertently thrown in the metaphorical towel. I became aware of this last week as I walked gleefully down the street shuffling through my billion song playlist on my new iPod that is scarcely the size of a guitar pick.

9th annual writer's contest
The 9th National Young People’s Press
WRITERS’ CORNER CONTEST for Youth and Young Adults 14-24

Young People’s Press (YPP) is a non-profit news service that provides youth and young adults an opportunity to speak for themselves and have a voice in the mainstream media. Several hundred daily and weekly newspapers across Canada and the United States have published YPP articles and many print them on a regular basis.
YPP is inviting all Canadians between the ages of 14 and 24 to enter a national writing contest. A panel of judges consisting of professional writers, journalists and educators will pick the winning submissions. Check out our Web site for writing tips (YPP.net).

There may be no limits to your creativity, but there are some rules to the contest:

•All entries must be between 600 and 1,000 words in length. Multiple entries are allowed.
•All work must be nonfiction.
•The contest deadline is Friday, August 20, 2004 and submissions should be sent to media@ypp.net or mailed to YPP, 100 Eglinton Avenue West, Suite 200, Toronto, ON M4R 1A3. Submissions will not be returned.
•YPP will endeavour to get as many of the winning and honourable mention entries as possible printed in daily and weekly newspapers across the country and the news service also will use a large number of the articles on the various web sites it publishes. As a result, YPP assumes non-exclusive publication rights to all contest submissions. Newspapers will be provided this content at no charge and with the exception of the prize money, writers will not be compensated for their work.
•Writers should type and double space all entries and they should include their name, address, e-mail address, telephone number and age. They should also indicate which contest category they are entering.

All entries must be from one of the four categories listed below:
1.THE DIVERSITY BEAT: Stories or opinions about race, racism, anti-racist projects or multiculturalism. What are your thoughts as someone who has experienced or observed subtle racism or an overtly racist act? What sort of multicultural or anti-racist projects are you involved in? How are you making a difference in the battle against prejudice and discrimination? Or you could profile an organization or initiative that is making a difference.

2.SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS: Stories and opinions about violence. Have you witnessed violence in your family, your peer group or your community? How did it make you feel? What can be done to eliminate it? Or you could profile and organization or initiative that is working to prevent violence or punish offenders.

3.POP CULTURE: Stories and opinions about the media, music, fashion or youth and young adult sub-cultures. What’s hot? What’s not? What’s hype? What’s going against type?

4.RANT: Have you got a beef? What’s your biggest concern? What ticks you off? This is your soapbox. Sound off.
